  He was a retired owner/operator of a barber shop. He was a member of the Noble United Methodist Church. Mr. Smith had served in the Navy for 13-1/2 years, spanning two wars. He received naval citation and a Presidential meritorious service commendation for the liberation of the Philippine Islands. He operated a Naval Recruiting Station for 15 years. He wrote a syndicated newspaper column called "Coin Chatter" for many years. He was the Editor of the Disabled American Veterans Sate of Illinois newsletter; member of the International Precious Metals Analyst Board; instructor at OCC regarding U. S. Coins and coin collecting. Mr. Smith was a life member in the following organizations, American Numismatic Association, Illinois Numismatic Association, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled Veterans, AmVets, Masonic Lodge #140, Masonic Lodge #362, Swords of Bunker Hill, and Veterans Service Officer for Downstate Illinois.
