Joe Wilson - Apr 11, 2000   THE BEGINNING OF THE MAGLONES IN AMERICA

James Maglone was born in County Monaghan, Ireland in the year of 1782.  This is known by the inscription on his headstone located in Shiloh # 2 Cemetery located between Olney   and Noble, Illinois.  There will be more about our great-great grandfather in days ahead.  Mae Wilson-granddaughter of Thomas Maglone left a very informative history of James Maglone and will be entered in days ahead.  This only the first of what will follow.  This is written by Jos Wilson-great-great grandson of James Maglone, great grandson of Thomas Maglone and grandson of Mary Ellen Maglone Wilson. Son of John Bernard Wilson and son of Mary Ellen Maglone -Wilson and Jefferson Tuttle Wilson.

Joe Wilson - Apr 12, 2000   THE BEGINNING OF THE MAGLONES IN AMERICA

According to the Mae Wilson the following was written.  The James Maglones came West during the great Westward movement when the territory was opened and trade was being developed.  It was the age of canals and railroad construction.  Mary Landers Maglone told her grandchildren that they had lived in the canebreaks of Indiana and that she had washed their clothes in the Patoka River.

James probably labored on the canals while in Indiana.  From Indiana they went to the prairie between Olney and Noble ,Illinois. He bought land and built a cabin for his family.  His boys were big enough to farm so he left his wife and family to care for the farm while he went to Kentucky to work.  He was a gardener and did landscape gardening for Henry Clay at Lexington, Kentucky.

When he had saved enough money to buy another forty acres he would return to Illinois and buy another piece of land.  He would then go back to Lexington and Frankfort for his gardening.

Great grandmother was a Catholic and is said to have walked seven miles to Olney on Saturday so she could attend Sunday morning services.  Her family did not go.

Felix Maglone lived at grandmothers (Isabel Maglone) and went to school sometimes, probably because the school was so near there.

There was an Elsie Maglone Tucker married to Abe Tucker and lived in Noble.  I'm not sure if she was mothers cousin or aunt.

Henry Dickey lived on a farm adjoining Grandma's.  His mother was a sister to Grandfather Maglone (Thomas Maglone).  He had a sister in Clay City,Illinois with whom he lived after he retired.  Henry was a bachelor.

Marion Maglone was a nephew who lived at Grandmother's sometimes.  He was about Gertrude's age.  Gertrude went to help Grandma during the summer for two or three years.  There was another Nancy Maglone, cousin, whom Uncle Rolla Richmond who he went to see when he went to California.  He said he introduced himself as saying "I married Nancy Maglone."  The fellow flared up, "I married Nancy Maglone myself."

Maglone seems to be a strange name around Noble so there are probably none left there
There are McGlones in Vincennes.  I have wondered if they were from the same clan.  I would like to trace them back to Ireland and see.
